PHOENIX — As the community continues to mourn Phoenix Police Officer Zane Coolidge, the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association is holding a barbeque fundraiser to make sure his family has all of the support they need.
The fundraiser will be on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 1102 W. Adams Street in Phoenix and all proceeds will go to Officer Coolidge's family. He left behind a wife and a five-month-old baby girl.
The fundraiser will begin at 11 a.m. and run until 9 p.m.
Officer Coolidge died on Sept. 6 after being shot in the line of duty while responding to a car break-in on Sept. 3.
Coolidge, a five-year veteran of the department, was just 29 years old.
“He was an officer, but he was a father, a husband, a brother, a son, that’s not there anymore,” Interim Phoenix Police Chief Michael Sullivan said.
Officer Matthew Haney was also shot. 12News was initially told his ballistic vest saved his life.
“(Haney) was shot, he has a bullet lodged in his body right now, so we don’t know if the vest actually played a part in deflecting the bullet or how exactly that occurred,” Sullivan said. "It's heartbreaking."
Haney was released from the hospital and is recovering at home.
The man accused of shooting the officers, Saul Bal, 41, is being charged with attempted murder and first-degree murder.
PLEA has also set up a page for the community to donate to the officers, which can be found by clicking here.
The Phoenix Police Foundation has also set up a page where people can donate, which can be found by clicking here.
