Officials have confirmed multiple cases of the norovirus at two units of the Phoenix VA Health Care System.

On Tuesday, 16 patients and 19 staff members were believed to be currently ill or previously ill with the virus.

Three of those patients are recovering in medical units while the remaining patients and staff members have fully recovered, according to officials.

Hospital officials are taking steps to stop further spread of the virus by stopping admissions to the effected units, cancelling group activities, and educating patients and staff on symptoms of the norovirus.

The norovirus is the most common cause of viral gastroenteritis in the United States.

It is passed in vomit or stool from infected people or by contaminated food or water.

Although the virus spreads easily, it rarely involved serious illness and those infected generally recover within one to two days.

The most common symptoms of the norovirus are:

– Diarrhea

– Nausea

– Throwing up

– Stomach pains
