High school lockdown caused by 'student bus driver did not recognize,' principal says

Mountain Ridge High School was under lockdown Tuesday morning. School officials said that safety of students and staff always comes first.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — A lockdown at Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale was lifted around 9:30 a.m., Tuesday morning. School officials said that the lockdown was caused by reports of an unknown person on campus, who later turned out to be a student.

Administrators worked with Glendale police to sweep the campus and investigate. Police confirmed that there wasn't a gun on the campus, and the lockdown wasn't being treated as a police situation.

Officials learned that the unknown person was a student of the high school that "the bus driver did not recognize," Principal David Vines said in a statement.

A notification on the school's website said that students and staff are safe and asked that people don't come to campus. The school website displayed the following message during the lockdown:

"We will always put the safety of our students and staff first and we thank you for your support towards creating a safe, orderly, and caring environment at Mountain Ridge High School," Vines said.

The school is located near 67th Avenue and Deer Valley Road.
