Phoenix Rescue Mission provides support to unsheltered persons in high-heat summer

Phoenix Rescue Mission works with homeless individuals to help them find permanent and temporary housing as well as get access to recovery programs.

PHOENIX — Phoenix Rescue Mission is continuing its Code: Red Heat Relief Campaign through August 31.

Corrine Stewart with Phoenix Rescue Mission has been working with homeless individuals in Maricopa County this summer to help them find permanent and temporary housing as well as get access to recovery programs.

Stewart said she was in a cycle of homelessness for five years while she battled a drug addiction. Now she uses her experiences to help others.

"I was able to break my homelessness, so I know that it's possible to do," Stewart said.  "I know that my story is not the same as what other people experience out here [and] everyone is different, but I know that there is hope and I can use that testimony to reach people more easily."

Stewart acknowledges the dangers of homelessness, especially during extreme heat.

"It's crucial to provide water and services to those in need, as the heat can exacerbate existing challenges."

"When I approach people, I offer water and listen to their stories," Stewart explained. "I assess their history of homelessness and any ongoing struggles to provide tailored support."

Jaime lived homeless in Phoenix for 12 years and said she's known too many people who have died from the region's extreme temperatures.

"[There are] too many, I don't even try to keep track because it doesn't do any good," Jaime said. "One of my [closest friends] died behind Subway."

Jamie said she encouraged people to show kindness and understanding towards individuals experiencing homelessness.

"A small act of kindness, like offering water, can make a big difference," Jaime said. "If you see somebody out there and you look thirsty whether they're homeless or they're in a car or they're walking their dog, whatever, give them a bottle  of water."
