Girl Scout cookie season begins

It will be an exciting Girl Scout cookie season in the Valley, with two new kinds of cookies & the chance to break a World Record.

The Girl Scouts are gearing up for what could be a record-breaking cookie season in the Valley. The season begins Monday, Jan. 26 when sales officially kick-off.

There are more than 17,000 girl scouts in central and northern Arizona, according to the Girl Scouts Arizona Cactus-Pine Council (GSACPC). Between Jan. 26 and March 8, the scout hope to sell 3.4 million cookie packages to Arizonans, with a special challenge during Super Bowl weekend.

On Jan. 30 & 31, in honor of Super Bowl 49 here in Arizona, the Girl Scouts will want to break a Guiness World Record. Each scout will work to sell 49 boxes each to break the current record for "most money raised through cookie sales in 24 hours," according to the GSACPC.

But, that's just part of the cookie-selling effort for scouts in the Valley. They will be walking around neighborhoods, visiting work places with family members and, of course, selling outside local businesses. The experience allows the girls to build skills like goal setting, money management and business ethics.

"Through customer interactions, girls have a unique experience to learn about and connect with their community, build confidence, problem solve and work together," said Tamara Woodbury, CEO of GSACPC, in an organization news release. "Much of the benefit for girls comes from learning by doing -- one of the most meaningful and memorable ways to gain new skills."

As always, proceeds from Girl Scout Cookie sales are used to support girl scouting in Arizona.

Sales, this year, may also be boosted by two new flavors: Rah Rah Raisins and Toffee-tastic. Rah Rah Raisins are oatmeal cookies with Greek yogurt-flavored chunks. Toffee-Tastics are buttery gluten-free cookies with toffee bits.

But the Girl Scouts will still be selling the classic favorites as well, including Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-si-dos and Trefoils. Each box costs $4, with the exception of Toffee-Tastics, which cost $5 (and are expected to be in limited supply).
