PHOENIX — February is Black History Month-- a time to remember the struggles and honor the achievements of the Black community in the face of adversity.
From a new series of events called A Taste of Melanin to a film festival, several events across Arizona will educate and engage attendees while honoring the contributions of Black history and culture.
A Taste of Melanin
This groundbreaking event series "immerses attendees in the rich, vibrant, and multifaceted world of black culture." A Taste of Melanin will be five events at different locations throughout the month made to celebrate and educate the community about Black culture. All events are free.
"Get ready to dance through music history! Black culture has shaped the music we listen to today. From gospel and blues set the stage for rock ‘n’ roll, while jazz has this crazy ability to cross all kinds of borders with its beats. African rhythms mixed with other musical styles gave birth to hip-hop, R&B, funk, and loads more."

"Join us for an unmissable film event showcasing “Black Panther” and an enriching panel discussion. It’s an experience for everyone, young and old!"

"Join us for an exploration that connects the dots between the spoken word, poetry, and the pulsating rhythms of hip-hop. These expressive art forms aren’t just separate entities—they’re interconnected threads weaving the vibrant tapestry of hip-hop today."

Vision & Sound: An African American Experience
The City of Goodyear is hosting the art exhibit "Vision & Sound: An African American Experience" at the Georgia T. Lord Library. The exhibit opened on Jan. 31 and will run until March 26.
I, Too, Sing America Film Festival
The Bahá'ís of Scottsdale will host the 2nd Annual "I, Too, Sing America" Black History Month Film Festival, with films showing throughout the month. Each film will be followed by a panel discussion. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Click here to register.

Black History Month Family Day
Join the African American Advisory Committee of Tempe History Museum for a fun, interactive kids' day to celebrate Black History Month! This fun, free event is for the whole family.
When: Saturday, Feb. 10, 12-3 p.m.
Where: Tempe History Museum, 809 E. Southern Avenue
Price of Freedom; Black History Play
The Phoenix Center for the Arts presents "The Price of Freedom," a play written and directed by Dr. Brenda Combs.
"In this inspiring production, you'll follow Young Barack & Michelle Obama on a school field trip to the Black History museum. Prepare to be moved as their class presents the remarkable stories of America's most brilliant millionaires and leaders who have forever changed the course of history," the center said.
