Winter storm hits Arizona on New Year's Eve

The Valley was soaked with rain while areas just an hour north of Phoenix were blanketed with snow.

An end of the year winter storm put a damper on the Valley's New Year's Eve celebrations.

“It feels like Alaska!” said Raphael Batiste visiting Scottsdale from Mississippi.

Below-average temperatures pushed partiers in Scottsdale to pack rain jackets and umbrellas.

"Freezing cold. This is crazy!” said Chantyl Butler and Pete Markgraf.

North of the Valley, the rain turned into snow. Families at the Sunset Point rest stop off of Interstate 17 were sledding into the new year.

"It’s just a fun day to get her to see the snow for the first time and see her reactions,” said Martin Bowe from Anthem, who was visiting the snow with his family, including his baby girl.

Phoenicians jumped at the chance to experience their very own winter wonderland just an hour away.

Heavier snow in the High Country led to treacherous road conditions and caused closures. The Arizona Department of Transportation asked drivers to postpone their trips.

Back in the Valley, the moisture made for a messier night, but most said nothing could rain on their parade.

"It's gonna be real turnt. We’re gonna turn up and drink. Everyone have a good night and be safe," said Terrill Clayburne visiting from Illinois.
