PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department is warning citizens to be cautious about text messages asking them to make payments for traffic violations.
An ongoing scam has been discovered by the police department that attempts to swindle money out of Phoenix residents by making them believe that they have an outstanding speeding ticket.
The text messages are made to look like they are from the City of Phoenix and ask recipients to make a payment on a speeding violation. The messages direct recipients to a fake website where they can make a payment to avoid having to appear in court.
Phoenix police are instructing recipients of this type of message to ignore its instructions and to "immediately delete it."
The Phoenix Municipal Court will not attempt to seek payment through email or text message. Residents can contact the Phoenix court at 602-262-6421 to verify outstanding traffic violations on record.
