QUARTZSITE, Ariz. - An odd cloud formation over western Arizona had people across the state wondering whether we missed another rocket launch out of California's Vandenburg Air Force Base.
However, there weren't any launches scheduled at the base Monday night, meaning it was most likely a curious cloud formation.
Some commenters noted that it looks like cloud iridescence, or irisation.
According to Earthsky, these rainbow-colored clouds are a fairly rare phenomenon that appear when there are especially small water droplets in the air.
One Twitter user mentioned the possibility of noctilucent clouds, which are high-altitude clouds that are visible in deep twilight.
According to NASA, these clouds used to be a high-latitude phenomenon, but lately, they've been seen as far south as Denver. NASA says noctilucent clouds are seasonal, appearing most often in late spring and summer.
We haven't had official confirmation on what exactly the formation is called. Regardless, it probably wasn't aliens.
