Oro Valley man dies in plane crash near Picacho Peak

A hiker witnessed a single plane crash near the top of Picacho Peak Saturday morning, authorities say. The state park is closed because of a "critical incident."

PICACHO, Ariz. — One person is dead following a small plane crash near Picacho Peak, authorities said. Picacho Sate Park is closed.

On Saturday morning around 7:25 a.m. the Pinal County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from a hiker who witnessed a single plane crash near Picacho Peak. The plane was occupied only by the pilot, authorities said.

The pilot, later identified as 68-year-old James Galvin of Oro Valley, was pronounced dead at the scene.

PCSO Search and Rescue, DPS Ranger 2 and Avra Valley Fire are currently working recovery efforts, and the scene will be turned over to the NTSB and FAA. , authorities said.
