Sheriff: Woman seriously injured after mauled by 220-pound dog in Arizona

The sheriff's office said residents were introducing the dog to a neighbor when the attack occurred.

COCHISE COUNTY, Ariz. — A 30-year-old woman was flown to the hospital Tuesday after she was reportedly attacked by a large dog, according to the Cochise County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were dispatched at about 6:30 p.m. to a residence in the Benson area for reports of a dog attack. Upon arrival, deputies found a woman who had been seriously injured and was transported by air to a Tucson hospital. 

CCSO said residents at the scene told deputies that they were introducing their 220-pound mastiff to their neighbor when the animal attacked and mauled the woman.

The woman remains hospitalized with serious injuries and the dog had been quarantined while CCSO continues to investigate.

The county contains around 63% of Arizona’s population and is 9,224 square miles. That makes the county larger than seven U.S. states (Rhode Island, Delaware, Connecticut, Hawaii, New Jersey, Massachusetts and New Hampshire).

One of the largest park systems in the nation is also located in Maricopa County. The county has an estimated 120,000 acres of open space parks that includes hundreds of miles of trails, nature centers and campgrounds.

The county’s seat is located in Phoenix, which is also the state capital and the census-designated 5th most populous city in the United States.

The county was named after the Maricopa, or Piipaash, Native American Tribe.
