PRESCOTT, Ariz. — A Peoria man has died after he was shot by a friend during a camping trip near Prescott, the sheriff's office said.
Yavapai County deputies were dispatched on the night of July 26 to reports of a man who had been shot in his abdomen while staying at the UCYC Camp. The 22-year-old man died from his injuries the following day.
The sheriff's office said the deceased man and a friend were "hunting skunks" while staying at a secluded area of the camp. After returning to their campsite, the friend was handling their gun and pulled the trigger, thinking the weapon was empty of ammunition.
The gun discharged and the Peoria man was struck by the gunfire. Investigators learned the deceased victim was going to be the shooter's best man in his upcoming wedding.
YCSO said the incident is still under investigation.
