Sheriff: 15-year-old boy arrested after high-speed chase, catapulting car across I-10

A Tucson teenager has been taken into custody after an early morning chase involving a stolen vehicle.

TUCSON, Ariz. — A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after he allegedly drove at high speeds, with no lights on and in the wrong direction along Interstate 10 before "catapulting" his vehicle through an intersection, officials said.

The Cochise County Sheriff's Office said a deputy attempted to pull over a vehicle on Highway 80 at about 3:30 a.m. on Feb. 1 after noticing the car had been reported stolen out of Tucson.

The driver pulled over near the St. David bridge. As the deputy approached the car, the driver allegedly sped off.

A high-speed chase ensued with the suspect allegedly driving up to 100 mph. CCSO said once the driver reached the Benson area, they turned off the vehicle's lights and began driving in the wrong direction along I-10 toward Tucson.

The chase continued for several miles until the suspect's car catapulted through the Highway 90 intersection and landed on the exit ramp, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies then took the teenage driver from Tucson into custody and CCSO said the suspect will be charged as an adult.

"We are so fortunate that no one was injured or killed by the reckless actions of someone so young," Sheriff Mark Dannels said in a statement.
