Sedona voters reject proposition to let people sleep in their cars

Proposition 483 was placed on the ballot this November to let voters decide whether Sedona can implement the parking program.

SEDONA, Ariz. — Sedona's voters appear to have rejected a proposition that would have allowed individuals to sleep in their cars at a local park.

Earlier this year, the Sedona City Council approved a temporary program to permit local workers to park overnight at Western Gateway Cultural Park. A lack of affordable housing in this region of Arizona prompted city officials to find a temporary solution until more housing units could be constructed.

"There is no available housing in the Verde Valley, it's totally limited," Sedona Councilwoman Jessica Williamson said earlier this year.

The program was met with division from residents who feared the Safe Place to Park initiative would create problems for surrounding residents.

As a result, Proposition 483 was placed on the ballot this November to let voters decide whether Sedona can implement the parking program.

Election results show Prop. 483 is projected to fail. As of Thursday morning, more than 2,600 people voted "NO" on the proposition and about 1,400 people voted "YES."
