MCSO: 1 dead, 1 missing after swimmers go underwater in Salt River

One person has died after two people went underwater at Sheep's Crossing Recreation Site and didn't resurface.

PHOENIX — One person is dead and another is missing after they went underwater at the Sheep’s Crossing Recreation Site and did not resurface.

According to early reports, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Lake Patrol deputies responded to the Salt River site shortly after 5:30 p.m. for reports of a drowning.

Deputies were told that multiple people "became distressed" while in the water, and at least two people who went underwater didn't resurface.

When deputies arrived, they found two people on Blue Rock Beach doing chest compressions on a man. Despite aid from deputies and paramedics, the man was pronounced dead.

Deputies searched the shoreline on foot, with drones and with air support but were unable to find the second person, MCSO said. The search was temporarily paused and will resume Thursday morning.

The deceased was not identified.
