Woman accused of stealing money from school APT surrenders to Scottsdale police

The suspect had recently been elected treasurer of the Cocopah Middle School APT before the alleged theft was discovered.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The woman accused of stealing $36,500 from the Cocopah Middle School APT has self-surrendered to Scottsdale police.

Police said Nubia Gonzalez had been elected treasurer of the school APT in April and took control of its bank accounts this summer.

The APT's president noticed in early July that the organization's savings accounts had zeroed out. It was later learned that several money withdrawals had been made from the PTA's accounts between June 28 and July 1.

Police said nobody had been able to contact Gonzalez and the address she gave to SUSD was "fraudulent."

On Aug. 13, police said the suspect surrendered and spoke with detectives.

SUSD released the following statement in response to the incident:

We are disappointed to learn about the alleged theft involving the treasurer of the Cocopah Middle School APT. It is disheartening to think that someone would take advantage of the hard work and dedication of our parent groups. Our APTs, PTOs, and Booster Clubs operate as separate non-profit organizations, and we greatly appreciate their tireless efforts to support our students, staff, and schools.
