SAFFORD, Ariz. — A suspect is injured after being shot by a Safford police officer, authorities said.

Safford police officers responded to the area of Relation Street and U.S. Highway 191 at 9:55 a.m. for a report of a dispute between a man and a woman. The man, later identified as Steven Stone, had a firearm and allegedly displayed the weapon, police said.

An officer gave Stone commands to de-escalate the situation but Stone did not comply. Stone allegedly brandished his weapon at the officer, police said. The officer then shot at Stone, hitting him. The injuries are not fatal at this time, according to police.

The area of 10th and 5th avenues will be closed for an extended time for investigation, police said.
