PRESCOTT, Ariz. - The Prescott VA nursing home is one of the 60 lowest-rated facilities in the country, according to data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
The data, which was compiled by USA Today and the Boston Globe, uses internal VA rankings that are not available to the public.
It shows the Prescott VA nursing home rates as a "one-star" facility, the lowest on the scale.
Among the problems identified: patients with a higher rate of bed sores than patients in private facilities and more patients who report being in serious pain in the past five days than patients in private care.
Prescott VA officials dispute those findings, however, saying they believe the nursing home is better than its one-star ranking.
"We believe our quality of care is much better than our one-star ranking shows," Kerri Wilhoite, assistant director of patient care said.
"There are areas where we can improve," Medical Director Barbara Oemke said. "We've been actively working on those areas for some time and I'm confident that we'll continue to improve."
Below is the data for all VA nursing homes in Arizona, averaged to show the entire state.
