ELOY, Ariz. - Eloy police reported a riot inside the Correction Corporation of America Red Rock facility Sunday morning, leaving 12 inmates and one staff member injured.
A disturbance occurred around 8:30 p.m., according to Jonathan Burns, director of public affairs of CoreCivic, a private company that operates the prison. Both inmate-to-inmate assaults and inmate-to-staff assaults were reported, Eloy police said.
Burns said the 12 injured inmates were taken to medical facilities outside of the prison for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. A CoreCivic staff member was also treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.
Eloy police were on the scene to help maintaining the outer perimeter of the prison. Eloy fire paramedics assisted with injured people.
CoreCivic is working closely with the Arizona Department of Corrections and local law enforcement, which will continue to investigate the incident, Burns said.
Those who want to check on an inmate at CCA Red Roco can call 520-464-3899 once the prison is secured.
