2 women struck by lightning at Horseshoe Bend, officials say

Police and paramedics responded to the Horseshoe Bend overlook Monday afternoon for reports of a lightning strike.

PAGE, Arizona — Two women had to be airlifted from Horseshoe Bend yesterday after they were struck by lightning, police officials said.

The Page Police Department was dispatched Monday afternoon at about 4 p.m. for reports of a lightning strike at the Horseshoe overlook during a heavy rainstorm. Upon arrival, officers and paramedics found two women who had been struck by lightning and were airlifted out of the area to receive medical care.

Their current medical condition was not disclosed by police. The women are in their early 20s. One of them is from Australia and the other is from the Netherlands.

Police said visitors of Horseshoe Bend should be cautious during monsoon storms since lighting strikes and flash flooding are common in this region of northern Arizona. 

Horseshoe Bend has become a popular destination for tourists looking to snap photos of the stunning landmark.
