FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) - The Pinal County Sheriff's Office is tightening its belt by freezing its hiring and putting one of its helicopters up for sale.
The office says it now has 65 vacant positions and that it hopes selling a helicopter will pay for operations of the aviation unit, which has two other helicopters obtained through a military surplus program. The helicopter to be sold was obtained through a state grant program.
According to the office, its current operation budget totals $35.5 million after a $1.8 million budget cut that took effect July 1.
