If you woke up in Phoenix Wednesday thinking it was as cold as Alaska, you'd be wrong. It was colder.
At one point during the morning, the Phoenix temperature dropped to 31 while Anchorage, Alaska was eight degrees warmer at 39°.
The low temperature at Sky Harbor Wednesday morning actually dropped to 30°, the coldest it's been in nearly six years. The morning low hit 29° on Jan. 15, 2013.
Phoenix also saw one of its lowest high temperatures in four years this week on Tuesday when it hit 51°. That's the lowest high since Jan. 1, 2015 when it was 46°.
But the cold is not just being felt in Phoenix, it's statewide. Arizona rang in the new year with plenty of snow.
Flagstaff recorded a high of 20° Tuesday, the coldest high in six years, according to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff.
The wind chill early Wednesday morning had places across northern Arizona feeling like it was below zero.
To the south, Tucson saw a trace of snow overnight, while other places like Nogales and Sierra Vista saw upwards of 6 inches.
With some of the coldest temperatures in years right now, five million Arizonans are facing freeze warnings Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
High temps in Phoenix will warm up starting tomorrow and into the 60s by the weekend.
Another winter storm will bring chances for widespread showers over the weekend with snow levels around 6,000 feet.
