TUCSON, Ariz. — A Phoenix man will spend 12 years in prison for his involvement in a deadly Arizona crash that killed four people, officials say.
Kevin Rojo-Barron, 21, was recently sentenced after he pleaded guilty to smuggling charges for an incident reported on March 2, 2023, on the Tohono O'odham Nation, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office of Arizona.
Rojo-Barron was driving a vehicle with four undocumented people riding as passengers when he sped past a stop sign and struck another car near State Route 86 and Federal Route 1, prosecutors said.
Three people in the other car, who were members of the Tohono O'odham Nation, all died from injuries sustained in the crash. One of Rojo-Barron's passengers also died.
The defendant pleaded guilty to conspiracy and transportation of illegal aliens for profit resulting in death.
In a statement submitted to the court, Rojo-Barron's attorney said the defendant wishes he would have died on March 2 instead of the others.
"Kevin is trying to make sense of his survival while coming to terms with the indescribable grief and loss he caused so many," the defense memo states.
