PHOENIX — The fatal shooting of Gila River Police Department Officer Joshua Briese has prompted condolences to come in from across the country.
On Wednesday evening, one girl in Brick, New Jersey, with the charity Running 4 Heroes will run a mile in honor of Briese. The Gila River Police Department has invited the community to gather at the new police station to join Morgan virtually as she honors Officer Briese and to participate in their own one-mile walk/run.
The department is asking residents to gather at the new station in Sacaton at 6 p.m. on June 5.
"We encourage citizens from across the nation to join us in a one-mile walk or run from wherever you reside to help honor this hero," a post by Running 4 Heroes said.
Briese was shot on Saturday morning after responding to a disturbance call at a home in Santan, authorities said. He did not survive. Briese had been with the department for less than a year and was still in field training, the FBI said in a news release. Another officer was shot and taken to a nearby hospital.
A bystander was also shot and killed and was recently identified as Alicen Apkaw, 23. Three other bystanders were shot and taken to a hospital.
That evening, Gila River Indian Community Governor Stephen Roe Lewis called a special meeting of the Gila River Indian Community Council for a moratorium on all dances within the community. According to documents posted on the council's Facebook page, the shooting occurred at a dance.
On Sunday, the FBI said two suspects, an adult and a juvenile, had been taken into custody in connection to the shooting. Their identities have not been released.
