A man arrested in connection with the killing of a deputy U.S. marshal in Tucson has been charged with the first-degree murder of a federal officer.

TUCSON — Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus confirms to News 4 Tucson that a Deputy U.S. Marshal was killed in a shooting on 15th Ave. near Jacinto St. Thursday night.

Officials have identified the U.S. Marshal as 41-year-old Deputy U.S. Marshal Chase White, according to the Associated Press.

White had been with the U.S. Marshals Service for three years and was also a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserve waiting for deployment, according to District of Arizona U.S. Marshal David Gonzales.

White leaves behind a wife and four children, ages 7 to 14 years old.

The marshal was serving a felony warrant on a man wanted on charges of stalking a Tucson police officer, Gonzales said.

The suspect has been identified as 26-year-old Ryan Schlesinger. He was charged with willfully killing an officer of the U.S. while the officer was engaging in official duties, for which Schlesinger faces the death penalty or life imprisonment, according to First Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Strange.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey took to Twitter to offer his condolences and prayers to the law enforcement officer’s family.

Tucson police confirmed shots were fired in the area of Jacinto and 15th Ave. at around 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Twenty-six-year-old Schlesinger was arrested at the home where the fatal shooting happened after he had barricaded himself.

Officers said there was a heavy police presence in the area for the investigation.
