KINGMAN, Ariz. — A police officer in Kingman shot and killed a man who ran from authorities following a traffic stop, the Kingman Police Department said Friday.
The Mohave County Sheriff's Office is now investigating the shooting that happened late Thursday.
Officials has identified the deceased man as Marcus Adam Fuentes, 36 of Kingman.
Kingman police said in a statement that the man who was shot was riding in a vehicle that was pulled over during a traffic stop and had an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest out of Maricopa County.
He ran away from the vehicle and was reportedly making "furtive movements" at his waistband and pockets, police say.
Fuentes was allegedly found hiding behind a pillar in a courtyard area. He allegedly told police he had a gun and was not going back to prison, police say.
The suspect continued to make "a furtive movement," resulting in one officer firing their weapon at Fuentes. A search of the area turned up no guns that may have belonged to the suspect.
Fuentes was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The officer has worked for the Kingman Police Department for eight years and is on standard, administrative leave, police said.
