MESA, Ariz. — A 51-year-old man is facing a manslaughter charge after he allegedly admitted to fatally shooting a man inside his residence Sunday night.

The Mesa Police Department said Jason Greene has been booked into jail following an incident reported at about 8 p.m. near 48th Street and Brown Road.

Officers were dispatched to the neighborhood for reports of a shooting and, upon arrival, they found 41-year-old Charles McClellan who had been fatally shot.

Court records show Greene initially told investigators he was woken up by a stranger knocking on his door and asking if he could spend the night at the residence. Greene said he eventually allowed McClellan inside and was attacked by him before firing his gun.

Greene later changed his story by telling investigators he actually knew McClellan because he had been living at the residence for the last couple of weeks, records show. He claimed an argument had occurred between the two of them that resulted in Green retrieving a firearm to get McClellan to leave.

A struggle ensued and Greene allegedly shot McClellan in the chest, records show. The suspect additionally disclosed that he had allegedly consumed a significant amount of alcohol that day.
