Measles confirmed in Pima County 1-year-old, 1st case in Arizona in 2019

The Pima County Public Health Department and ADHS are investigating to find out if there was any community exposure.

PIMA COUNTY, Ariz. — A 1-year-old from Pima County has been diagnosed with measles, the Arizona Department of Health Services announced Friday.

The Pima County Public Health Department and ADHS are investigating to find out if there was any community exposure.

This is the first measles case confirmed in Arizona in 2019.

Health department officials said the confirmed case is in a person with Asia-related travel.

Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, health officials say.

The disease begins with symptoms that include a fever of 101 degrees or higher, red, watery eyes, a cough and a runny nose.

A rash that is red, raised and blotchy appears after several days, beginning on the head and the hairline and moving down the body, according to health officials.

People infected with measles can be contagious up to four days before the rash appears, when people may not recognize they have measles, ADHS said.
