'Grateful this chapter in my life is now over': Man who attacked Martha McSally is sentenced

The former senator of Arizona was assaulted while jogging last November.

PHOENIX — A man was sentenced Thursday in Iowa for attacking former U.S. Sen. Martha McSally last year.

Dominic Henton was given a suspended one-year jail sentence with credit for time served, followed by two years of probation. The defendant must also register as a sex offender.

McSally said the defendant had pleaded guilty to aggravated harassment with sexual intent.

In a statement posted online, McSally said she was "grateful this chapter in my life is now over" and shared the impact statement she provided the court during the defendant's sentencing hearing.

"My attacker already grabbed my body and assaulted me sexually without my consent that day. I was determined to not let him take more of my life from me," McSally's statement reads.

McSally, who had represented Arizona in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, was visiting the area for a speaking engagement last November when she was attacked while jogging.

In 2019, McSally revealed during a Senate hearing that she was raped in the Air Force by a superior officer.
