The LG plant was expected to manufacture cylindrical batteries, which offer compact energy storage that's ideal for electric cars. The facility was said to be the first of its kind in North America.

LG had planned to use the plant to produce batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

In a statement to 12News, LG said "LG Energy Solution is adjusting the pace of planned investment execution efficiently and flexibly according to market conditions, and focusing on optimizing our operations. As part of such efforts, we are temporarily putting the construction of Arizona ESS battery facility on hold."

LG did confirm the construction of the electric vehicle battery facility would continue, "Meanwhile, the construction of cylindrical EV battery facility in Arizona is ongoing as planned."
