Officials: 1 inmate died in attack on employees at Yuma prison

The DOC said it was investigating "all facets of the disturbance" and would seek additional charges for inmates involved in the attack.

YUMA, Ariz. - The Arizona Department of Corrections says one inmate died in the attack on prison personnel at Arizona State Prison Complex - Yuma Thursday night.

Prison officials said ASPC-Yuma remained secure and on lockdown Friday.

According to officials, inmates at the medium-custody Cheyenne Unit attacked prison personnel around 6:45 p.m. Thursday.

The DOC said inmates threw rocks, set fires to mattresses and other property outside on the yard, and broke into the prison health unit. About 600 inmates were involved, according to prison officials.

Of those 600 inmates, officials said 26 were taken to a hospital and treated for minor and non-life-threatening injuries. Fifteen have returned to the prison complex.

Inmate Adam J. Coppa sustained fatal injuries during the attack, officials said. His death is under investigation.

According to prison officials, of the 11 employees who had minor injuries, 10 have already returned to work.

Quick responses from tactical teams from the Yuma, Lewis and Tucson prison complexes helped to bring the disturbance under control around 9 p.m.

Officials said damage occurred in housing and other buildings. There were broken windows, sinks, toilets, fire alarms, locks, and flooding and ceiling damage due to broken water lines.

As cleanup and repairs are underway, prison officials said some inmates are being assigned to alternate housing. The inmates involved in the attack, are being contained in fenced recreation areas on the yard. They are received "necessary provisions," according to officials.

The DOC said it was investigating "all facets of the disturbance" and would seek additional charges for inmates involved in the attack.
