COOLIDGE, Ariz. — A hazmat situation in Coolidge triggered precautionary evacuation orders on Tuesday.

The evacuation happened after a trailer containing hazardous material began smoldering, according to Heritage Environmental Services.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The evacuation order ended at about 2 p.m. Tuesday.

"Stay indoors, close your windows, turn off air conditioner, and bring pets indoors," the sheriff's office wrote in a statement.

Residents ordered to evacuate were allowed to seek refuge at the Coolidge Council Chambers on Arizona Boulevard.

A box containing used solvent wipes and rags was what began smoldering and later caught fire, which was quickly extinguished.
