Grand Falls is flowing again and here's what you need to know before you go

Also known as "Chocolate Falls," the northern Arizona hotspot is a popular destination.

Arizona is full of spectacular and breathtaking locations that are certainly must-visit destinations.

And while iconic spots like the Grand Canyon and Havasu Falls fill your Instagram feed, there is another place worth a visit: Grand Falls.

The incredible waterfall is located 30 miles east of Flagstaff and is also known as "Chocolate Falls," for its muddy, flowing water. If you go, you would think you've been transported to the backyard of Willy Wonka.

For those looking to make a trip to Grand Falls, here's everything you need to know.

How did the Grand Falls form?

According to Flagstaff.com, the falls were created by volcanic runoff from the Merriam Crater and created a lava dam. The water from the falls is fed by snowmelt and rain from the White Mountains which flows into the Little Colorado River.

Do the falls run all year long?

No, because the Grand Falls rely on snowmelt and rain, the waterfall doesn't run all year long. If you want to see it in person, the ideal time to see Grand Falls is during March and April. You can also see the falls on occasion in the summer during the monsoon. But Flagstaff.com says the window is short and it depends on the weather patterns of the year.

How big is the Grand Falls?

At over 185 feet tall, according to Atlas Obscura, Grand Falls is a mesmerizing view for anyone who visits. Many who visit also catch glimpses of the beautiful rainbows created by the impact and spray of the falls. To add a little perspective to the size of the Arizona waterfall, Niagara Falls measures in at 176 feet.

Do you need a permit to visit the falls?

Nope, there isn't a hiking permit required to visit the falls. But the Leupp Chapter House says no ATV's, camping or alcohol is allowed.

How do I get to Grand Falls?

From Flagstaff, the best route is to take I-40 east to Winona, Exit 211. Once there, drive north for about 2 miles then turn right on Leupp Road. Continue to drive for about 15 miles before turning left on Indian Road 70.

When you arrive there, keep an eye out for the Grand Falls sign. Visitors will find the parking area for the falls 8.5 miles at the end of IR 70. On a side note, if you're using Google Maps, the app may show you a different route through Leupp before heading north toward the falls. Flagstaff.com says it will add about an hour to your trip.
