PHOENIX — Gov. Katie Hobbs is urging California Gov. Gavin Newsom to reevaluate proposed legislation that she believes could have a devastating effect on Arizona's gas prices.

In a letter co-written with Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo, Hobbs expressed concerns over legislation that could change how California's refineries are regulated.

Newsom recently called upon the California Assembly to hold a special session to address gas prices, where legislators may review a bill that could impose inventory requirements on the Golden State's refineries.

The Western States Petroleum Association recently warned officials that the proposed inventory levels could raise gas prices and the neighboring governors want to avoid that from happening.

"With both of our states reliant on California pipelines for significant amounts of our fuel, these looming cost increases and supply shortages are of tremendous concern to Arizona and Nevada," Hobbs and Lombardo wrote in their letter.

The governors asked Newsom to delay taking action on the proposed legislation until further policy discussions can be held.

A group of Arizona lawmakers have also penned a letter to Newsom, warning the governor not to rush the legislation without considering its impact on the West.
