Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has asked the state's Department of Transportation to suspend Uber's license to test and operate autonomous vehicles in the state following a fatal crash earlier this month.
Uber had already announced it was suspending its operations in the wake of the March 18 crash, but the state's suspension means the delay is on Arizona's terms rather than Uber's.
"Arizona will not tolerate any less than an unequivocal commitment to public safety," Ducey said in the letter.
The governor's office has not said whether it will suspend other autonomous vehicle testing in Arizona, such as Google's Waymo.
The crash killed 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg as she was crossing Mill Avenue near Curry Road.
Uber may face charges after the crash, according to an expert who spoke to 12 News.
