Following deadly flooding, Democratic Senate candidate Ruben Gallego visits Havasupai Reservation to witness recovery

Flash flooding near the Havasupai Reservation and the Grand Canyon stranded hundreds and left one woman dead.

SUPAI, Ariz. — 12News had an exclusive opportunity to travel into the Havasupai Reservation with Democrat Senate Candidate Ruben Gallego and 10 journalists covering national politics.

The trail to the Supai Village is approximately eight miles from Hualapai Hilltop, a remote area of the Grand Canyon, and approximately a three-hour drive from Tusayan and the Grand Canyon Village.

Supai Village is home to the Havasupai Tribe, the most remote tribe in the contiguous United States. In August, the reservation was struck by a flash flood and was only able to reopen to tourists in early October.

12News witnessed the work the tribe members accomplished in clearing their lands and trails, and were able to visit the village and the incredible Havasu Falls on Oct. 14, Indigenous People’s Day.
