Flagstaff police identify man in 'suspicious death' investigation

Medical personnel and criminal investigators responded to Elden Street in Flagstaff early Wednesday morning, police said.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The Flagstaff Police Department is investigating the "suspicious death" of 48-year-old Marcus Smith.

Medical personnel responded to the area of Elden Street, just off of Route 66, in Flagstaff early Wednesday morning for a call regarding a "man down." They located Smith, who was injured, and then pronounced dead at the scene.

Criminal investigators are investigating the incident as a "suspicious death." According to police, a suspicious death is "a suspicious death is any death that is not obvious as to why it occurred, or the circumstances that led up to."

Flagstaff police said anyone who may have seen Smith in the 48 hours prior to Feb. 28 or have any information relating to the investigation should call the police department at 928-774-1414 or Silent Witness at 928-774-6111. 

When police found Smith, he was wearing a black sweater, black sweatpants and black shoes. He is a Native American man, is approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 230 pounds. Police did not release any information pertaining to Smith's tribal enrollment.
