Flagstaff PD officer involved in 2018 shooting found dead in Mesa from apparent suicide

The department said it's mourning Officer Daniel Beckwith's death and their crisis intervention team is working with employees to deal with the loss.

PHOENIX — A Flagstaff police officer who was involved in the shooting death of a suspect in February 2018 was found dead in his Mesa home Tuesday.

According to Flagstaff PD, Officer Daniel Beckwith died of an apparent suicide.

Flagstaff police said Mesa police were called to Beckwith's home Tuesday after a report of a "suicidal subject." Police found Beckwith dead when they arrived.

"The City of Flagstaff and the Flagstaff Police Department extends its deepest condolences to Officer Beckwith’s family and friends," a Facebook post by Flagstaff PD read.

Flagstaff police spokesperson Sgt. Charles Hernandez says Beckwith, who had been with the department since July of 2014, was placed on leave following the 2018 shooting.

The body camera footage from the shooting shows a police officer repeatedly giving commands to the suspect before opening fire.

Beckwith returned to duty but was placed on leave again in June of 2018. The department said Beckwith had been living with his wife in the Mesa area since then. Hernandez would not disclose the reason for the second leave.
