PHOENIX — A Flagstaff man is going to prison after pleading guilty to arson, officials said.

According to the United States Attorney's Office, 21-year-old Dahntay Dunbar was sentenced to 20 months in prison, followed by 60 months of supervised release.

Along with the prison sentence, Dunbar was also given the order to pay $20,146.13 in restitution. U.S. District Judge Roslyn O. Silver handed down the judgment.

The punishment stems from Dunbar's guilty plea to arson of a dwelling that occurred at the Grand Canyon National Park in May 2024.

Officials said Dunbar entered a locked cabin in the park between the night of May 17 and the morning of May 18. It was discovered that the cabin was the residence of Dunbar's former girlfriend.

Authorities said Dunbar then lit some of his former girlfriend's possessions on fire in the cabin. A bystander reportedly put out most of the fire before the fire department arrived.

Dunbar was eventually arrested by National Park Service law enforcement rangers on separate charges and admitted to having committed the arson.
