YUMA, Ariz. — If you were in southern Arizona early Wednesday morning, you may have felt a small shake in the ground.

A 4.6 magnitude earthquake just southeast of Mexicali in northern Mexico shook parts of Arizona awake early Wednesday morning.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake started shortly before 5 a.m. It could be felt mainly in Yuma, but some tremors reached as far north as Quartzsite.

If you felt the earthquake, you can report it to the USGS for researchers to get a clearer picture of the effects of the quake.

The USGS considers a magnitude 5.3 to be a moderate earthquake, while a 6.3 is considered a strong earthquake. Each whole number on the scale represents a tenfold increase in the measured size of the quake.

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake, like the one felt Wednesday, is often felt but typically only causes minor damage.
