1 injured after car veers off cliff on SR-88, south of Canyon Lake

Several public safety officials were able traverse down to the crash site and rescue a person who was in the vehicle.

MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz β€” At least one person sustained minor injuries Monday morning after their car went over a cliff on State Route 88 south of Canyon Lake, officials said.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said the vehicle crashed about 250 feet from the cliff located near milepost 204, which is in the region between Canyon Lake and the border separating Maricopa and Pinal counties.

Sky12 footage showed paramedics and firefighters rescuing someone from the crash site.

The section of SR-88 leading to Canyon Lake snakes up through a mountainous area.

It's not clear what caused the vehicle to veer off the cliff. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is assisting DPS in responding to the crash.

*Editor's Note: DPS had initially stated that two people sustained injuries in the crash. But now the agency says only one person, the car's driver, sustained injuries.*
