COCONINO COUNTY, Ariz. — A person who attempted to BASE jump from the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park has died.

Park officials were alerted Thursday morning at about 7:30 a.m. to the report of a visitor who BASE jumped from Yavapai Point. Park rangers responded and located the deceased jumper about 500 feet below the rim along with a deployed parachute.

The body was transported to the rim by helicopter and then transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office. The person's death is under investigation and their name has not been disclosed.

Park officials said it is illegal to BASE jump in all areas of the Grand Canyon. The recreational sport involves jumping from fixed objects like buildings, bridges or cliffs.

This is the second death reported at the Grand Canyon within the last week after a North Carolina man fell to his death from the rim on July 31.
