GRAND CANYON VILLAGE, Ariz. — A hiker from North Carolina was found dead at Grand Canyon National Park on Wednesday.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report of a solo backpacker who did not check in with a family member while attempting the Thunder River Trail-Deer Creek loop.

The next day in the morning, National Park Service search and rescue personnel found a person who was dead along a route connecting Lower Tapeats Camp and Deer Creek Camp.

The backpacker has been identified as a 60-year-old man from North Carolina was on a multi-day solo backpacking trip from Thunder River to Deer Creek. An investigation into the incident is underway by the NPS in coordination with the Coconino County Medical Examiner, GCNPS said.

No additional information is available at this time, GCNPS said in a news release.

This is the 14th death the park has recorded in 2024. On average, the park reports 12 deaths per year. This is also the second person from North Carolina who has died at the Grand Canyon in the last month.
