Arizona woman accused of poisoning husband's coffee gets probation

Melody Johnson was placed on probation Friday after pleading guilty to two counts of adding poison or a harmful substance to food or drink.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Melody Johnson, the woman who was accused of poisoning her husband's coffee, has been sentenced to three years of probation beginning today.

The judge told Johnson that she is to have no contact with her husband.

The husband told investigators he believed Melody was trying to kill him and used pool testing strips to determine his coffee pot allegedly “showed high levels of chlorine."

As part of her sentencing, Johnson must participate in a mental health evaluation and follow any recommended treatment.

She is also barred from having any alcohol.

In early April, Johnson pleaded guilty to two counts of adding poison or a harmful substance to food or drink.

Originally, Johnson had been charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempting to commit aggravated assault, and poisoning food or drink.
