COCHISE COUNTY, Ariz. — An Arizona woman was arrested and booked on 146 charges of animal cruelty and neglect.
On Monday, Feb. 19, authorities booked 56-year-old Jill Houchens from Hereford, after authorities located many deceased animals and animals needing medical care at her home.
The charges consisted of 27 felony counts and 119 misdemeanors counts.
An investigation was initiated on Feb. 6 after receiving reports of animal cruelty at Houchens' house.
The initial report indicated several animals were on the property and significant unsanitary conditions inside and outside of the house, as well as reports of deceased animals inside a freezer at the home.
During the course of the investigation, a search warrant was served at her house on Feb. 9.
Animal Control and deputies discovered several neglected animals living in extremely poor conditions.
The area where animals were kept was filled with feces and there was no clean area for the animals to stand.
There was little to no water available and no food left out.
A total of 24 animals were removed from the property, including five dead animals, and eight animals required medical attention for issues including, but not limited to, embedded nails, infections, and severe matting.
The living animals are currently being held as evidence until a decision has been made in the case.
Houchens was reportedly known to operate an animal rescue and provide pet sitting services in and around Cochise County.
She has been booked in the Cochise County Jail.
The investigation is ongoing.
