Arizona teachers collect signatures for initiative to raise $700 million

Their goal is to have 250,000 signatures by July 5 to get the "Invest in Ed" initiative on the ballot in November.

PHOENIX - Arizona Educators United held a rally Saturday morning hoping to keep the "Red for Ed" movement going, even after the Arizona Board of Educators discussed potential legal action against teachers who participated in the statewide walkout.

While they board could pursue that, it doesn't look like we'll see it happening, or even being discussed any time soon. The board took that discussion off Monday's agenda. The president of the board said it's not the right time.

Meanwhile, teachers gathered in front of the Capitol Saturday collecting signatures that would put the "Invest in Ed" initiative on the November ballot. Their goal is to raise another $700 million to go back into the school budget and bring the budget back to the $1.1 billion it was in 2008.

The ballot initiative would raise income taxes on single households making more than $250,000, or $500,000 if they're filing jointly.

Arizona Educators United spokesperson Noah Karvelis says they want to keep the "Red for Ed" momentum going.

"We had a lot success at the Capitol, but we're still missing $700 million from our budget, and that's missing every year," Karvelis said. "So we're out here to fill that gap, get Invest in Education on the ballot, because it will generate that money and we can go back to fully funded schools."

Karvelis says so far they're finding a lot of support.

Their goal is to have 250,000 signatures by July 5.

Meanwhile, as the debate continues, class in many school districts will be back in session in just about six weeks.
