Arizona pit bull shot by sheriff's sergeant

An MCSO spokesperson said in a statement Monday that the dog was back in its owner's care after being taken to an emergency veterinarian.

WITTMANN, Ariz. - A Maricopa County Sheriff's sergeant shot a pit bull Sunday in Wittmann after falling while backing away from the dog.

Body camera footage from MCSO shows officers walking up to a building and a pit bull running up to them, barking.

The officer visible in the footage, Sgt. Daniel McPheeters backed away from the dog, tripping. As he fell, he shot the dog once.

An MCSO spokesperson said in a statement Monday that the dog was back in its owner's care after being taken to an emergency veterinarian.

The statement said the officers were checking out a tip about criminal activity at the home, but that they determined the tip was unfounded.

MCSO supervisors supported the use of force, according to the statement, which also said the office's Professional Standards Bureau was "reviewing the situation."
