'The Great Tamale Debate' and 4 other bills to watch as Arizona Legislature returns to work

Governor Hobbs will deliver the State of the State speech on Jan. 8.

PHOENIX — Gov. Katie Hobbs' veto of the so-called "Tamales Bill" during this past year's legislative session was one of the few things that upset both Democrats and Republicans.

Now, with the new session of the Legislature starting on Jan. 8, the bill is back. It's one of five bills to watch in January.

Concert tickets

Were you too slow to snap up tickets to see Beyoncé or Taylor Swift? A bipartisan group of lawmakers are backing a bill that would ban the automated bots that gobble up vast quantities of tickets as soon as they go on sale.

Photo radar

Republican Sen. Wendy Rogers wants to put red-light cameras out of business. She argues photo radar tickets are ATMs for city governments. Hobbs vetoed a similar bill last year.

State land

This is another Rogers rerun. She wants to ban 16 foreign countries or their citizens from controlling land in Arizona. China is one of the targets.

But the bill wouldn't block Saudi Arabian entities that suck the ground water out of state land to grow alfalfa that's sent back to Saudi Arabia.

School safety

A bipartisan bill would block the release of school blueprints under public records laws. The shooter who killed six people at a Nashville school last year relied on detailed building maps. This legislation fell just short of passage in the last session.

Tamales

The Great Tamales Debate isn't over.

Hobbs vetoed a bill last session that would have allowed street sales of homemade tamales and other perishable foods. A Republican bill would legalize home-cooked foods for sale.
