3 people critically injured after head-on crash in Pinal County

Patients had to be extricated from the cars by firefighters after the head-on crash near Highway 87 and Arica Road.

ELOY, Ariz. — Three people were airlifted to the hospital with critical injuries after they were involved in a head-on crash in Pinal County, officials said.

The Eloy Fire District said the collision occurred Wednesday afternoon near Highway 87 and Arica Road, not far from the Red Rock Correctional Center.

Firefighters used hydraulic tools to extricate patients from the wrecked vehicles. The patients were taken to trauma centers to be treated for life-threatening injuries, the fire district said. 

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

ADOT offers driving tips on its website to help keep people safe on the road.

"There’s always room for improvement when it comes to road safety," the department said on its website.

ADOT's suggestions include:

  • Don’t speed or drive aggressively
  • Never drive while under the influence of substances
  • Avoid distractions while driving
  • Wear your seatbelt and make sure all passengers are doing the same
  • When an emergency vehicle is on the side of the road, move over
  • Stay extra aware in work zones
  • Be prepared for weather conditions that make driving dangerous
