PHOENIX — HonorHealth announced Wednesday it is assuming control of several medical facilities in Arizona operated by Steward Health Care.

Starting this week, HonorHealth is handling the daily operations of the following Steward facilities in Arizona:

  • Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa
  • St. Luke’s Hospital in Tempe
  • Steward Mesa Hospital – Emergency Room
  • Florence Hospital in Florence
  • Multiple outpatient physician practices

"HonorHealth continues to invest in responsible healthcare development where there is a proven need, and we believe assuming operations of these existing facilities is an effective way to optimize our resources," said HonorHealth CEO Todd LaPorte in a statement. "We’re excited to work with the Steward Health Care professionals to ensure access to high quality, essential care for these communities."

Steward announced earlier this year that it was filing for bankruptcy protection and was planning to sell its many facilities throughout the country. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said her office would be opening an investigation into Steward.

Steward also operates Phoenix's St. Luke's Behavioral Health Center, which had its license revoked recently due to poor conditions observed by state officials.
